Instant Orthodontics at Bloor West Smiles – What Porcelain Veneers Can Do For Your Smile!

It is not uncommon for a patient to dream about their perfect smile - with teeth that are straight and even.  Yet,  a common deterrent that makes a patient think twice is the many months and sometimes years of orthodontic treatment involved.  Instant Orthodontics  is the artful application of porcelain veneers.  It does not require any moving of your teeth and it is one of the fastest ways of achieving perfectly straight and natural looking white teeth in less than two weeks!

For many adults , orthodontics (braces) are just not an option .  They do not want to invest the time and effort to make their teeth straight.  If you are looking for a fresh start with a new smile, Instant Orthodontics may be the answer for you!  Dr. Alexandre Kostirko, a Toronto dentist, has been practicing Instant Orthodontics at his Bloor West Smiles dental clinic for over 25 years.  It is a cosmetic dental procedure that uses porcelain veneers to not only make your teeth straight, but also white and beautiful.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain Veneers are very thin shells of stain resistant porcelain that are designed to fit over the front portion of your teeth.  They are semi-translucent, meaning that light passes through them in a manner very similar to your normal tooth structure.

Problems That Dental Veneers Can Treat
  • chipped teeth
  • cracked teeth
  • teeth gaps
  • crooked/overlapping teeth
  • deeply stained teeth

Ideal Candidate for Porcelain Veneers
The best candidate for porcelain veneers are those that suffer from any of the above dental issues.  They should be in overall good health and not suffer from any serious dental problems that require restorative care.   In some cases, a patient may be suffering from serious chips, cracks , malocclusion or misalignment.   In these cases, other traditional restorative treatments such as dental crowns or orthodontics would be better suited to treat the needs of the patient.  Dr. Alexandre Kostirko will discuss all options at length during your initial consultation.

Why Are Porcelain Veneers Considered Instant Orthodontics
The reason that porcelain veneers are referred to as instant orthodontics is because the results are as dramatic as orthodontic treatment.  The advantage being that there are no brackets, wires or bands involved in the treatment and porcelain veneers can be placed in 2-3 visits.

Dental Tips For Parents

By Alexandre Kostirko

Interacting with parents of our small (but important) patients, we at Bloor West Smiles Dentistry realized the need to educate  parents on some of the not very obvious subjects.

From an early age, your child should be taught the importance of maintaining good oral health. Below are some dental tips for parents that will help you.

Bloor West Smiles Dentistry wants to share some tips for young parents who want to teach their kids good dental habits.

It's important to start taking care of your kids dental hygiene early. Some of the most important thing to remember are:
  •     Be the example for your child. It's what grown-ups do, and your child will want to imitate you.
  •     When the first tooth erupts, clean it with a soft cloth. When back teeth come in, use a soft toothbrush.
  •     Make cleaning your child's teeth a daily routine.
  •     Floss the baby molars. At about age eight or nine, your child should have the dexterity to floss. Show him or her how to do it.
  •     Find fluoridated toothpaste in a flavor that your child likes, and use only a pea-sized amount. Remind him or her not to swallow the toothpaste.
  •     Commend your child for flossing and brushing. Tell your child how beautiful and clean his or her teeth look afterward.

Choose the right dentist. A dentist who does not love treating children or who pushes the child to have dental treatment can cause anxiety. Your child's long-term oral health is too important to permit bad experiences at the dentist's office.

Oral health for expectant moms

By Alexandre Kostirko

If you're pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you've got a lot to think about.

Your gums may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but Bloor West dentist, Dr. Kostirko advises to not neglect your oral health during this exciting time.

The rise of hormones during pregnancy can leave teeth and gums sensitive and more susceptible to tooth decay and gum infections. Developing gingivitis is very common among pregnant women and serious untreated cases can develop into periodontal disease. Etobicoke dentist in Bloor West, Dr. Kostirko has treated periodontal disease in expectant mothers throughout his over 20 years of practice. Periodontal disease attacks the tissues and bones supporting the teeth, leaving sores that allow the bacteria to enter the blood stream and move throughout the body.

In pregnant women, the bacteria can reach the placenta, where the developing baby does not have an immune system capable of fighting off this disease. Signs of gum disease can include red, swollen, tender gums; gums that have receded; bad breath and loose teeth. Dr.Kostirko of Bloor West Smiles dental, recommends that all pregnant women should brush and floss every day and receive at least two thorough dental cleanings during pregnancy in order to maintain good oral hygiene and avoid potential problems.

Please contact Bloor West Smiles Dentistry, a Bloor West Village dental practice serving Etobicoke community for over 20 years, if you are interested in more information about prevention and treatment of gum disease or dental care before, during and after your pregnancy.
